Most the people I went to school with have moved on to other fields that pay way more than they were making in the metrology field.  Most of them are managing networks, finished off their EE Degree, one is a florist another owns a chocolate boutique.

Me as well, I am more of a software guy these days than a bench tech.

But as a company  we don't see business paying much more for labor in this industry.  The required skill level for the average technician is decreasing.  As we more to more and more automation and automated test solution we will need more station operators than technicians. Recently I saw a fully automated micrometer calibration system.

It is just an indication where things are headed, labs are getting automated, techs are making less, and if you want to move a head in this industry you will need to get a degree or know more than just calibration.

Location has a play in it also. $23 per goes way farther in Tenn then $30 per in Jersey (plus you have their drivers to contend with)  :-D

TN has no personal state income tax and Nashville is a very nice city. (No connection to company, nor do I live in TN. Just my opinion)  :-)

Ive hired people in at more money if they are worth it. We are looking for good techs with motivation to learn the business the right way. All calibrations done by customer, local, manufacturer and or DOD procedure. There is potential to make good money. The hourly rate is just that. We also give all our onsite techs a company vehicle to drive to and from work as well as offer a bonus plan which includes a quality kicker. Onsites are about 50% of what we do. Mainly local onsites (within a 3 hour radius) and then youre home in the evening. We do not promote or encourage lick and stick at J.A. King. We promote and reward performance and quality! If your interested in any of the locations, please call my cell. 919-805-0469
