What to tell the boss if you really could.

As an employee one is not always able to feel free to say what is thinking to a boss, but if you could, what would you say?

One of my favorites is:  Don't treat me like I don't exist.  I am a person, if I mess up, tell me.  If someone else in my group messes up, tell them, don't punish the whole group.  A little positive feed back is a good thing.

One thing that always got to me was people who knew how to play the system and were entrenched in more a political role than one of leadership.  To them I would say:

All stepping on people to get ahead does is leave a wake of downtrodden and bitter employess, who given the correct opportunity, would most likely not hesitate to push your career in front of the proverbial bus.

"Give me the things I need to do a good job." If you don't know, ask me. But, basically, time, materials, information, maybe even a little authority--these are what I need to be successful.  Fantasy huh?   Keeping information from me makes feel like a mushroom,  kept in the dark and covered in fertilizer.

Oh, just a traditional greeting "How's your wife & my kids?"

Wow, I feel bad for you guys. I buy my employees beer 2 times a week. That way when they whine about something they have to do I just say " No Beer For You". They do the job and I am happy. They get a paycheck and beer and are happy.

How about a boss that actually works some on the bench? I was running my lab in the Marines night crew and still put out more equipment than my crew. Then at the end of the night I stayed and ran the numbers and did the boss stuff. Took usually about an hour and a half. Most of the bosses I have had since are last one in first one out and have no back bone. Sometimes you have to stand up for your employees. People will work harder for you if they know you have thier back. Also the boss should generally be smarter than you and have a very good general knowledge of thier field. I would tell my boss to stop treatin his emp;oyees like assets to be munipulated and stop treatin the customers like we are doing them a favor. We have a job because they give us one. The customer can always find someone else to do the job.
