As a Lab Manager myself, I will say that I want my technicians to speak up and let me know of any problems that affects their ability or the team's ability to work as a team to accomplish the team goals and objectives. I do not want people to ignore workplace problems.

In this situation I would recommend to continue working with the immediate supervisor to understand what and how the work environment can be improved. And if the supervisor is unwilling to take further actions, I would let the supervisor know that you would like to make a formal complaint and submit it to him and the HR Department and Management. In this case you have not worked around the Supervisor but gave them the opportunity to improve the situation. Good luck, but stay engaged. That is what I expect from my technicians.

One of my biggest pet peeves are lazy people at work.  I have a great deal of pride working in the Metrology field.  I appreciate the importance of being meticulous and precise in everything I do.  At the end of the day I can only control my actions.  Believe me, that's been a hard fact for me to accept.  Some people are just lazy by nature and will do the bare minimum.  Maybe they don't have the personal drive and in most cases management allows them to just skate by.  In mine and PurelyNonsense's case, our good work ethic gets taken advantage of.  I don't mind busting my @ss when I look around and see everyone else working hard.  That's team work.  I do mind carrying other people(s) weight that don't give a sh*t.  It's even worse when the person getting paid to lead the team could care less about anything and is just counting down the seconds to when he can clock out.  It's frustrating as hell.  All I can do for now is continue to work hard and worry about what I am in control of.  One would hope eventually management wakes up and realizes one lazy person is killing the lab's moral.

So do hard workers bring everyone else up??

It was a lot more simple in the Marines.  We'd dog on someone relentlessly for a couple weeks for being a sh*tbag.  If that didn't motivate them we just FAP'd them out to go check ID's at the chow hall.  Can't go around hurting people's feelings or self esteem in the civilian sector....

Oh we don't worry about hurting his feelings. We make comments a lot but they honestly don't care. My only hope is the retirement that is on the horizon. They only have 3 more years...
