Yulista's "take care of you" money was only 5K. You're on your own when its time to leave. Its still considered a stateside move. The list will be smaller but there will still be people who will want to work and live in Hawaii.

yes they did. One guy went to Guam, a couple of others bailed, the rest converted to civil service.
I left Guam back in 2012. Household goods and one car set me back over $15,000 just to move to Hawaii. That sucked.

I'm not aware of any calibration positions with Schofield. I do know that if you are retired military you can be put on a waiting list to live on Schofield Barracks Housing. Its a flat rate for rent and utilities per month.

The only vacancy on Schofield (my former job) closed a few weeks ago. You more than likely missed out, hired a whole new crew last year - everyone but the clerk retired within 6 months of one another.....

And if you do manage to get out there, do not waste your money on the dumps that IPC calls housing - at least the ones they let DACs live in. Much cheaper and better options off post.

That's crazy everyone retired that close together! I miss living on Oahu a lot. I interviewed at Hickam when I initially EAS'd. They were only looking for a physical/dimensional tech at the time and I prefer working on electronics. Also my family had already moved back to the mainland so I wasn't sure I'd be able to afford the cost of living on 35/hr out there.

Ditto. Stationed at Naval Station Pearl Harbor 82-85, and absolutely loved it. But living in Naval housing at the time for free, and shopping at Hickam Commissary, which at the time was mainland prices, plus COLA, COMRATs, eating at the chow hall for lunch, and a $16K reenlistment bonus for three years didn't hurt.

By the end of the three years, I had "Rock Fever" and couldn't wait to leave (still in my 20's at the time). As I was disqualified for further military service by the Naval Reserve in 1987 due to eye surgery, it is still tempting to take a civil service position and work toward a civilian government retirement.

We even figured out that being empty nesters, we could perhaps rent a small one bedroom apt in an area where we wouldn't need heat or A/C, take the buses to save on car ownership costs - and my wife is a high level admin who could make some good money. Probably never happen, but its nice to dream.
