What the heck will we do when we can no longer fold our shirts into 6" squares??

There was not 18 hours of training on folding when I went in '98. There was a book to read with some pictures. First guy to interpret it showed everybody else.

In my entire career as a PMEL tech, I fired the M16 twice- once in Basic Training (Marksmanship Medal there) and once at F.E Warren AFB, before I PCS'd to Ramstein AB, Germany.  I never thought of myself as a "warrior" as I schlepped around Europe in my VW pickup carrying TFCU equipment from base to base.  We DID get in to a different mindset when the terrorists blew up the MAC terminal at Rhine-Main and the headquarters USAFE building at Ramstein- you start looking for suspicious things under the wheel-wells of your olive-green USAF truck...!

I have always held the opinion that the Air Force fought smarter.  The Army, Navy, and Marines were silly- enlisted people out front getting shot at, high-ranking officers way in the back.  In the Air Force, we sent our officers to go fight, while we had a beer at the NCO Club.  When the planes came back, they were serviced for another sortie, and we'd send 'em out again...  "Go get 'em, sir!  We'll be at the Club 'til you get back!"  Remember, "precision bombing starts with precision measurement."

I still fold my underwear in 6" squares- go figure...
If it works, it's a Fluke.

Well actually you weren't in the military. You were in the AirForce. Isn't that kind of like calling the Boy Scouts " Special Forces"?

Yes, but the Boy Scouts have adult supervision...

Next thing you know they'll drop the 341s and have the trainees doing pushups!

I like the bit about the fake M-16's.   I guess your AF recruits will run around yelling "BANG" at each other.  Hahahahahahahahahaha

The M-16's are fake; the F-16's are real.

The USAF, in their wisdom and common sense, does not train its people to carry guns and go out to shoot the enemy.  They are trained to service and support the aircraft and other systems so THEY can go out and shoot the enemy, preferably from as far away as possible.  This is good for the personnel and easier on the equipment, making both available to fight another day...  A vague familiarity is needed for hand guns for that .001% of the time that our Army, Marines, and Navy will be overrun by the enemy and the Air Force will be all that's left...

Like you always say, "precision bombing starts with precision measurement."
If it works, it's a Fluke.

No offense, but, according to my evening news here in the Springs, there are quite a few USAF personnel getting their butts nailed and wasted over in the Sandbox. We just had a female tech sgt come home all messed up and using a cane.  The old war days are over.

I am very sorry to hear that.  Maybe it's not such a bad idea for the Basic course to turn out some "warriors..."

Here in Cincinnati all we ever hear about are the Army and Marine casualties, usually guys from the area.  We bury the dead with full military honors, and to a man, the wounded want to get healed up and go back...!  Amazing patriotism, and an unfaltering belief that we are helping the Iraqi people, and doing the right thing by being over there.  They think the protesters at the ranch in Crawford, TX, are just plain stupid...

My brother-in-law, US Army retired, did a tour there (his group captured Saddam), and my nephew, a USAF flight engineer at Dyess, has done three tours there, flying C-130s.  Talking to them gave me a different perspective, 180 degrees away from what the liberal press has been reporting.  There are probably stories from folks on the ground there that would agree with the press, but it's very interesting to talk to someone who's been there and done that...
If it works, it's a Fluke.

Not so much a "boot" camp.  More bunny slippers camp.   :-D
