Need some advice. My niece is looking to go in the Air Force in 2 yrs. She's going to do the Jr/Sr year enlistment thing this school year. She likes computers and cars. Wants hands on. I'm advising her that the new cyber terrorist unit that the Air Force has started is a good career. Or PMEL.

Any recommendations for me to pass on to her. And why do you recommend it.

Tell her to go to college and get an education.   This is not the USAF I joined.

College not an option without debit. Her mom and my brother split. Their not married. Trying to give the girl life advice to help her better herself.

Please encourage her..

We need more computer able people out there, and hands on is the best way..Keesler (area wise) sucks, but can be dealt with...

Frank and I (mostly Frank..I have to produce) put together a program on the MMS to do 9500 base units and the 9530 heads..much faster than punching the buttons on the machine or the 3458..

We need more computer savy people...

Good luck to her

Going into an IT position in the AF, and take all the college classes and related opportunities, would be my advice.  The AF will never be perfect, but it's a good place for a young person to start.

My boy is only 13 and I am already pushing him to join the AF or, if he insists, the Navy or Coast Guard. If he really wants to go to college, I'm all for it, but the life experience you get in the military is priceless. (Face it, why pay to go to college to learn stuffs and learn how to hold your liquor when Uncle Sam will pay you to do it??!!)

If she is still in High School, and it sounds like she is, push her to join JROTC if her school has one. If it doesn't, sometimes you can work with a neighboring school to attend theirs (especially if your school USED to have one). Basic Pay isn't bad nowadays, but I know the Army, and possibly the other branches (not too sure on that), gives E2, maybe E3, at enlistment if you have a few years of JROTC under your belt......

Tell her to join the Marines! Oohrah!

I always recommend the military over going straight into college.  As you all here probably know you get the discipline needed to be able to complete college, plus the new GI Bill is amazing.  Hey wait-if you're a vet your children are able to goto college for free in CA (they may have to establish year residency first, but hey, that isn't a punishment by any means)

Anyways, that's my recommendation.  I could go on for days about how awesome the usmc is, but I don't want to start any heated debates.  :)
