Military vs Civilian labs?

The beautiful thing about working for a lab outside of the military is that if you have a bad boss, you can quit!  My first job out of the Navy was for a commercial cal lab and would watch instruments go into the bosses' office (with no cal standards) and come out later that day with a cal label, developed ulcers after 6 months and left that job after 9 months.
