Since I came into the PMEL world a little over three years ago. I noticed a lack of those that would lap instead of NRTS. This also goes along with the replacement of racks and movements in Dial Calipers. Is this just my observation of one base or is it AF wide. I'm not throwing stones.....I'm just curious.

If anyone wants the parts breakdown of most handheld dimensional tools....email me or ask, and the I will find the way for them to be posted

Still waiting for an answer to this. If you need the numbers i can give them to you. Pretty much regardless of manufacture.

As a commercial lab, we repair most all calipers.
Lapping a carbide faced mic is a waste of time for us, though, as the time consumed will exceed the cost of replacement in most cases.
For customer equipment, I'd have to pass on doing mics.
The exceptions are Supermics and P&W SMM's.
I've hand lapped three SMM's and on Mitutoyo Supermic, and two of our comparator mics.
One was a week long job, but it was a 24" one we aquired from FMC, the other is the P&W AT68E 12", which I got to as dead flat and parallel as I've ever seen one.
We don't use the SMM as much now, as the laser system we have is used much more.
It's okay to be ignorant, as you can always ask questions, but there is no cure for stupidity.
