One of our Coast Guard brethren sent me this question via the contact form.  I e-mailed my response to him, but it keeps getting sent back undeliverable.  So I thought I would put it here in hopes he sees it.

QuoteWe have a Verstest600 torque wrench tester and was wondering what standard  I would use to have these calibrated. We have the Snap- On TTC-400 and the TTC-12 transducers.

Thanks for any help
My reply:
QuoteI am not familiar with the Snap-On torque tester, but it looks very similar to the one that the AF uses.  We use the CDI unit in our labs.  In order to calibrate it, we attach each transducer to a test stand and then hang calibrated weights from the stand checking various points over the entire range of the transducer being tested.

So for us, the only standards required are the weights.  But our method requires the use of the test stand.  My recommendation would be to get with Snap-On and see what they offer as far as that goes.  CDI provides our entire setup (weights and all).

If you have any more questions, just let me know.  Also, you may get some better info from some of our members that work in the commercial sector if you post the question in our forum.  If you want, I can put it out there for you.  Just let me know.  I hope this helps you out.

I am by no means a K6 expert, but I have cal'd the CDI's.  So if anybody else has any input, please pipe up.

I think you're going down the right road, Hoopty, but you'd also require a calibrated torque arm to hang the weights from. The ones we use to do the CDI are ICO, but they're pretty accurate.  If you have a calibrated torque arm and some calibrated weights, you're good to go for calibrating torque standards.  All that's left to argue about is the accuracy.

Don't forget the calibrated weight hangers.

Also I believe that the torque arms should be calibrated on an interval. All it takes is that cable to get a little tweaked of the arm to not be....oh say 12.0000" The amount of touqe done at the PMEL's should warrant this calibration alone.......yet, ICO.............but truly isn't an NCR item also a ICO :?

Hell ya'll should see what we use to calibrate a torque wrench...............................................

I didn't mention them because they are technically part of the weight set...

You can purchase a radial torque arm through CDI. The CDI unit has held it's calibration year-over-year in our lab. If you need to go low check into Futek. They mfg the low end transducers at an acceptable accuracy.........CDI does not. However, CDI is more than willing to integrate competitor's transducers into their system.

AT Luke PMEL, we recently submitted an AFTO 45 for it.  I'm not sure if we received a reply yet though....I'm on leave.
