Totally off the wall topic/question, that I'm figuring someone else in the group has delat with.  A number of years ago Igot sick of paying the high phone bills and got Vonage, which we've had for a number of years.  There are getting to be quite a few VOIP phone services out there.  I'm wondering if anyone uses Magic Jack, and how does it compare with Vonage and other standard VOIP type services.  It seems like it is unusually cheap.  If I were to switch to Magic Jack, what would the difference be?  No advertisement intended here, just pure sincere questions.

Magicjack works well using a cable based service. Doesn't work so well on a satellite service.

Not trying to pump landlines or anything.....

But, in my experiences, Ma Bell's internet (DSL) is more reliable than Cable. Yes, Cable is faster, at times. But in all of the exploding metropolis' that I have lived (Northern Bama, Southern Louisiana, and Clarksvegas, TN areas) DSL offered an extremely reliable 6-10 MB connection. Cable speed varied widely from less than 1 MB to 10+ MB depending on how many of my neighbors were watching the new porn link I sent them  Not to mention that here in Bama, our area was growing so fast that the Cable crooks ran out of IPs for their customers. I literally had to reset my modem to get an IP, and it wouldn't last for more than an hour or two. They were "sorry" about the inconvience.

Since I prefer DSL, I just stick with a landline, which getting the DSL and landline together is cheaper than getting just DSL. Go figure.

We did use Vonage when we were on cable. I even used it in Korea. It was great, except when the cable speed dropped.......

No experience with Magicjack, sorry....

I have some friends who work in Asia, who are from Texas.  They have Vonage, so I can call them as a local call from my cell.  I have other friends living in that same general part of the world that I just noticed have MagicJack, using it as their U.S. type phone number.  Since I am on Vonage, I was curious as to the pros and cons of Magic Jack.

After seeing the topic title, it looked like a spam and I thought "they're baaaaack"... Anyway, I've never used Magic Jack, but my cable service is a 10+ MB fiber-to-the-house what they call "triple play" where voice, TV and data are all streamed over the same piece of fiber for one (not so) low price. I've never had speed or connectivity issues because each house has a dedicated line and all the fiber cables are buried all the way to the telco, and because it's all buried we never lost service even during hurricanes and other power outages, all I have to do is plug the service entrance box into a UPS or generator for uninterrupted service.

Try 2 cups and some string... You gonna need lots of string for those long distance calls...
