Title: Job listing in KY
Post by: ZZ on 03-11-2008 -- 00:04:19
Has anyone seen the ridiculous job advertisement posted on PMEL. org (below)? Is it legal to discriminate against single people? That's about the most ignorant job post I've ever seen.  Read below

20 Feb 2008

------------------

Calibration and Repair Technicians

Onsite Calibration Service, Inc.  has an opening for 2 field service technicians and 1 in-house technician.  Both positions require military trained PMEL/TMDE technicians with at least 3 years bench experience.  Qualified technicians must be married and relocate to Louisville, KY (moving assistance available).  Since 1996 we have steadily grown to an operation which services customers on-site in 46 states.  Our primary customers are hospitals and hospital support businesses, but we also service avionics repair centers, and manufacturers along with their various support businesses.  Our capabilities are second to none as we have reinvested our profits back into the company and the employees.  The minimum annual pay raise has been $2000. 00 and among the equipment assigned to each technician is a Fluke 5500A with Scope Option.  Our goal by Spring of 2008 is to be ISO-17025 accredited.

Field Service Technician

-          Starting salary $42,000. 00 plus bonus.  Average bonus has been more than $8000. 00 and is based upon 5% of your on-site billings after training.

-          Training averages 3 to 4 months, during which time you are probationary.

-          You must be available to travel for 2 weeks a month minimum.  Typical routine is 2 weeks on the road, one week in the lab and one week off, in a 4 week period.  Yes, you are correct; we provide 3 months paid vacations.

-           We also provide paid PPO medical for employees and their dependants with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield up to $1000. 00 per month.  Some of us ole farts' premium slightly exceed that and we need to kick in the difference.

-          Per Diem rates are $122. 00 and $150. 00.  Employees pocket the unspent per diem tax free.

In-House Technician

-          Starting Salary $42,000. 00

-          15 days of personal time off per year.  Vacation, sick or otherwise.

-          Paid Medical up to $1,000. 00 per month's premium

Applicants and technicians must be married, clean shaven, with an acceptable haircut (pony tails are not acceptable unless you are female), no visible tattoos, no ear rings of facial hardware.
Applicants and technicians must be able to lift and move 100 pounds

Applicants and technicians must have an acceptable driving record with no DUI's in the last five years.

I've seen them post multiple times in the past 5 years. They won't even respond to my e-mails. I believe one of the guys I work with was let go after his divorce.

Its legal discrimination.

I've heard it referred to as nepotism. Or similar to.

That is incredible!
Marital status is a protected class

It keeps the homosexuals off their work force...  However, I don't think they can discriminate based on marital status.  That's like "You can only work here if you attend the Antioch Baptist Church..."  That doesn't fly in this country...

Yes they can only hire married people if they wish. Since it's basically an onsite on the road a lot job they could say they want a married person for stability, instead of a wid unstable single person traveling.......It's just like places that won't hire a smoker

That is not near enough money for 2 weeks on the road a month. I might spend 1 week once every three months and get paid much more than that. Married? most guys like myself don't want to go on the road away from the wife and kids that much. Good luck, but it will be hard to find a person who will take this position. The only standard your tech has is a 5500 w/scope opt. that seems like a job for a OJT guy. Your company is aiming way to high. Matter of fact most OJT techs I know make more than your salary your offering.

I have seen this posting over the past of years, it used to state at the very beginning of the post "We are not an Equal Oppurtunity Employer!", in which case I would assume they can be as selective as they want.  I think for the most part as long as they are not descriminating accorcding to Race or Gender, then most organizations simply don't care, and I said they were usually very upfront about not being an EOE.

Coup: Quick question, what do you believe the standard starting salary for techs to be? I have been doing this for 12 years, and from the most part our career field pays 42- 56k as a base, I make above that but from whats out there that I can tell anyway not too many postions are paying a whole lot at the tech level, mostly QA and Managers.  Now this is a only a guestimate, not actual qoutable documents, but 50k to start seems fair with 3 months of paid vacation and the employee keeps any left over from per diem.  Too bad I am single or I would do it.

Anyway just wondering, maybe I am looking in the wrong places.
Have a good one.

Have you guys read the whole thing? They give you 3 months off per year?? Plus 15 personel days. Right now I am getting like 25 days off per year ( plus Holidays). These guys are like teachers 3 months off per year? They are starting out at $20.19 an hour. When I got out of the Marines I started out at $12 and hour and that was the best I could find in my area. I was on the road a decent amount and got no per diem. Where are you guys working at that you are snubbing your noses at this place? Ok so this starting salary is too low? You get 25% of the year off SO that like starting off at $56000 per year (adjusted for the fact that you get 25% of the year off I took their annual salary devided it by 3 then multiplied by 4) Thats more cash than I make now with overtiome and that the base? Please tell me where you all work so I can get a job there.

Well, I for one have issues with a place that would want me to have a TB Test and publish the results on the WWW along with a copy of my DD-214.

Oh, and it seems that the majority of the people running the place have the same last names.

Unless you've ever worked in a "Nepotism Central" you don't know what kind of grief you're in for.

But that's just me. :-P

Lets see,

They tell me how to look (no tatoos/clean shaven/groomed) how to live my life(must be married not divorced-oh ya thats because she decided to have fun while I was out of town Onsite) and post pretty much all my personal info for all to see.  Hmmm last I checked Stalinism didnt really work.  Theres more to life than money like the right to do what I want when I want.  God Bless the USA!

YOU SAID IT BEST NEPOTISM!!  I LIVE AND WORK JUST SOUTH OF LEXINGTON FOR DOD LAB AND I CAN SAY THIS PLACE IS CRAZY.    SLEEZY/UNEDUCATED IS MOST ACCURATE.

THE OTHER POSTER WHO SAID YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR IN FOR IS MAKING A SOLID AND BEST HEEDED WARNING.   WORSE YET IS IF YOU TAKE THE JOB  FIGURE ITS YOUR LAST.  MANAGMENT WONT LET THE LOW PAID OR (TRASH) EMPLOYEES GET OUT ONCE YOUR IN THE ONLY WAY OUT IS TO BE TRASHED AND QUIT.

RUN AWAY DONT LOOK BACK.  I WISH I HAD BEEN WARNED ABOUT THIS PLACE.   ITS A CAREER ENDER UNLESS YOU WANT TO STAY WHERE YOU ENTER.
