I've been dealing with Cybercoders about a job in Charlotte.  Are you affiliated with them? I don't separate from active duty until may 2008, but I'm trying to make some contacts now.  Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.

What area are you looking to relocate to?

I'd prefer Middle Tennessee, but I'm open to most anywhere, with a few exceptions.  California isn't worth the lousy pay and I don't want to rebuild my house every year, so Florida isn't too high on my list either

Hey Calsquid81,

This is Sandman and I have a question for you.   What is going pay salary for PMEL technicians?  I have been out of the field since 1999 due to Base Closure and I have been thinking about getting back into the field.   I was a Phys. D guy (K-6) at a Type 11 lab, in San Antonio for 14. 5 years.   I have worked K-1 & K-2 and I was Radiac certified at Lowry AFB.   Maybe you can help me or if not,  can you send this message to others.   What have you heard about Yulista:  Good or Bad!

Need some direction. . .

Dallas/Fort Worth is good for me. I'll take what I can get, and the food there is great. Its no wonder Texas has 4 of the top 5 fattest cities in America. How long ago were you on the Wasp?

I was there back in 2000 for the first pump of 2000. Texas as a bunch of jobs. Send me your resume. I have alot of contacts here. The company I'm at now is hiring.

Hey CALSQUID81, TBolt here.  I lived in worked in the DFW area for 10 years.   With your experiance, most companies will probably try to start you out at around $22 to $24/hr.

If you are interested, I can offer you much higher $ and outstanding benefits, if you are willing to move to Amarillo, Tx.   This offer is good for anyone interested.   I run the electronics k1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and Radiac lab for my company.   Like my post, you MUST be able to hold & maintain a Q (DOE) clearance.

Tbolt, I currently hold a secret clearance that doesn't expire utnil 2016. Will this suffice? I don't separate from the Navy until April 2008, but I'm willing to reloacte pretty much anywhere.

CALSQUID81, a Q Level clearance is pretty much the same as a DOD Top Secret.    Most of the people coming out of the millitary have no problems, obtaining a clearance.   The DOE (department of energy) supposedly does not accept the millitary clearances.    You will have a full back ground check regardless.    If you are serious about this, I am sure we will have some openings.    What you need to start working on is getting a SF71 form completed.  It is like 25 pages of information that you will have to submit.    Second, you need to submit a resume.    If you want to mull this over for a while, go for it.    I spent 9 years in the Air Force, got out in 94, lived in the DFW area and worked for some pretty good companies.   My wife was from Amarillo and we made the drive (6.  5 hrs) twice a month.    To give you some info, the people of Amarillo are great, the cost of living is excellent and the job is very stable.    We have a full compliment Lab.    Electronics, Physical, Deminsional, and Radiac (Health Physics).    We currently have about 27 techs, some have been here close to 40 years!  That speaks for itself.   Several are getting ready to retire and we need people bad!
Where are you now? Remember, the DOD will pay for your move where ever you decide to settle so, don't just settle on the first job that comes your way.    I can honestly say, that with your current experiance, I can start you as a Tech I, which is about $26 to $27/hr.   Plus 401K, Sick leave, 2 weeks vacation starting, education assistance, etc, etc.

TBolt,

Is there any chance you can get me an SF71 form? I currently reside in Newport News, VA, but I'm willing to relocate almost anywhere. The Navy does pay to move me, but only as far as my home of record, which is just north of Pittsburgh, PA. That's about 515 miles, so I'd have to pay the difference in mileage. I'm not against that, but I really have to know that wherever I'm going will be a good fit for myself and my family. Another question I have is related to your company's hiring practices. Do you require competency testing? I've noticed many companies have resorted to that and I would like to know what is expected of me as a technician. I'm out to sea at the moment, but I'll be back fairly soon. I'd really like to arrange a telephone conversation to discuss these and any other topics I may come up with.

Hey Calsquid

I don't know exactly what the application requirements are for the DOE, but the form he is talking about is a SF 171. It has been obsolete for over 10 years but some places still will accept it.

Here is a link to download a PDF of it
http://www.jobs.bpa.gov/How_To_Apply/forms/sf171.pdf

Here is the continuation sheet for it if you run out of room
http://www.jobs.bpa.gov/How_To_Apply/forms/sf171af.pdf

This website lists the more current OF-612 and also provides a link and information about Federal resume requirements.
http://www.opm.gov/forms/html/appn.htm

Again, I don't know the requirements of Tbolts personel office so verify what they need and how to apply.

Good luck finding a job you like out in the civilian world.

Ol'Dave

CAL,
The SF171 is the correct form.   Just do a search of it in pdf format and you should not have any problems.   We still require the SF171 and not the new form, but I will double check with my HR department.   I may be mistaken but, If you find a job when you get out of the Navy, they will pay for your move no matter where you go.  It used to be back to your home of record but I believe this new policy is to help vets.  When you get to port, contact your TMO office and they will be able to answer the question better then me.   I will be glad to answer any questions over the phone.   Just shoot me an email at chugbug10@yahoo. com.

Cal,

Please note that the military WILL NOT pay to move you anywhere you want. They pay to move you to YOUR HOME OF RECORD (usually where enlisted from) or to another location that is cheaper or the same cost of where you're wanting to go. You might have to come up with the difference.

Dan,

Did you ever work for Lockheed Martin? I've believe I heard your name before. :?

Thanks for the input RFCAL, but California is not an option for me. It's just not a place I'd like to raise my kids and the money isn't really great for the cost of living.
