Title: Torque Safety
Post by: Aaron on 09-09-2004 -- 11:11:46
I have been guilty, as I'm sure some others are, of not always using the Protective Shield when calibrating some of the smaller torque wrenches on the CDI. Usually it's due to just plain forgetfulness.

Fortunately it was in place this morning as I was calibrating a 1000" lb impulse wrench. The 3/8" adaptor I was using snapped and half of it shot into the shield, the other half shot the other way across the lab. I've never seen one snap before, or even thought one would at what I consider a relatively low torque. The point here is, It Can Happen.

Another consideration that came to my attention is Torque Calibrator placement. Mine is set up in the middle of the Clean Room, which allowed half of the adaptor to fire off in the other direction unobstructed. I'm the only one that works in the Clean Room here but there could have easily been another person in the line of fire, or, the fragment could have damaged a piece of equipment. Since I don't have an available area to position the rear of the calibrator to face a wall, I plan on placing an additional shield behind the unit during calibrations.

Just a reminder from me to all of you... Be Safe.

Good info.
I know I'm guilty of that myself... that and the pressure shield.

Shields?  You guys have shields?   I work for a contractor, safety isn't always a high priority!

You've been hit in the ribs a few times haven't you?

If you had a shield, you wouldn't have these problems. 8-)

if you don't have a shield .....then you are not following the calibration procedure, hence not making a valid traceable calibration. :?

HA! HA! Flynn you've been exposed! You're a non-conformist! You're fired! Gather all your things and leave the island! Do not pass Go! You ARE the Weakest Link. Goodbye!
