My cable company wants to charge me $40 to install a cable modem. Lets see, plug in the power, plug in the ethernet cable and plug in the cable from the wall. That's worth $40 dollars?
I asked them if they can just drop it off or I pick it up and they said no. They say that I might blow it up. When I explained to them that if someone can manage to blow one up that they had no business owning a computer. What the HE!!? Have any of you ran into this problem?
Nope. My cable company let me pick it up and install it myself. Sounds like they're just making that excuse to take even more of your money!
I think I just found a way around it.
I recently moved, and discovered my new house is in an area serviced by Adelphia, not Time Warner Cable. Fine. When you have one choice as to who provides cable service, it makes the decision process go so much faster...
So, I pack up all my old TWC gear and haul it back to the Time Warner store (so they can stop charging me the monthly fee for the cable boxes and modem). While I'm there, I learn that they're buying Adelphia, so all my stuff will change again in a couple months anyway...
I did get to hook up my own equipment, though. There was a glitch in getting the new Adelphia cable modem to play nice with the wireless router, but that was easy to fix... Their DVR is pretty nice, too!
I had the modem installed about an hour ago and my wife called me from home to tell me that they want to charge us. I told her to let me talk to the tech and I told him I am not paying anyone for something my 8 year old child can learn to do in 2 minutes. He then said I owed nothing. I wonder how many people are getting ripped off? Well I'm no sucker.
Who's your provider, Coup? :?
It's BrightHouse Comm. I checked my speed last night on 6 different sites and all of them have me over 4200kbps. I love my 10M connection. My whole neighborhood is on fiberoptics and they had to install a converter for my modem and that's why they wanted to charge. I didn't have to pay though. My connection is almost at T2. I love it. :-D
Do you have a fiber optic port (jack) in your house? Do they use it for phone, cable, or just Internet connections?
Yes. there is a fiber optic port right below the cable port on every jack in the house. The whole community was built with fiber optics. It was one of their selling points. I had no idea that it would allow me to have that kind of speed. I am not sure about all it's uses. I just moved there this weekend. All I know is the cable company had contracted the infrustructure for communications. They wanted it to be high tech. I don't even pay for my cable or internet. It is included in my H.O.A. fees. I will investigate it further.
My cable modem works pretty well; it's fast enough for the stuff I do at home, but man, it makes me feel like I'm living in the stone age compared to your set-up!
I am more than happy. when I was looking at buying I thought that the fiber optics sounded cool, but I really didn't know. After having my connection through fiber optics I am a fan. I did look up info about it and it seems that all the new planned communities here in central florida are doing the same thing.
Yeah. They tried to rip you off. Brighthouse has a self-install kit for their internet setup. :x
I don't care now that I am surfing like a madman.
You're surfing? I thought you were at work. :?
Get off the beach, Coup.
Hahaha...I'm surfing with speed.
Surfing under the influence is very dangerous. :x
Calvin & Hobbs. Nice. :-D
Here in Vegas we have Cox Communications for our cable.
Cox. It's more than just a name, it's a way of business.
Are you saying Cox sucks?
(be careful with your pronunciation here...) :-)
I had Cox Comm in Ga. and they do suck. :-o

Yes, I am. $50 for friggin' cable internet!? What the hell can drive cost up that much from the former dial-up? Plus the $50 I used to pay for digital cable. Never anything on anyway. Yes, I know there's new equipment and all with new technology, but damn!
That was my favorite.
Cool. 8-)
You make me want to go buy a collection.
The Complete Calvin and Hobbes came out last year. It's a little expensive. :-(
I need to get it. My oldest boy would love it.
They're hardcover and come with a slipcase. They're really nice.
I told my wife to look for it today when she goes shopping.
Is there anything to be said for cable vs. satellite? Is one better than the other? I've never looked at satellite so I was wondering if it would even be worth it.
We've been on satellite for about twelve years, chances for cable out where we are is slim and none. Only bad thing is when storms roll in and blocks the signal.
I never had that problem with DishNetwork. I had them for 4 years when I lived in Georgia and I loved it.
