I am not much of a Phys/D type, but would appreciate some expert advice on hot dipping compound. We are using Type I from Precision Brands, and heating it in what looks like a small solder pot. It produces a rather objectionable odor and causes some of the techs to get irritated nasal passages.
I am thinking we need to upgrade the exhaust fan for it (using old school looking ruond aluminum pipe that goes down to about a foot above the pot on a bench top. I am also thinking we need to put in a wider flange at the end of the exhaust pipe.
The next thing is that I believe we are heating it too hot. I haven't yet measured the temp when the pot is heated up. But if anyone knows a good temp to heat it to, I'd appreciate it.
I'd also like to know what type thread protectant other folks are using. Is this the best type to use, or are there better types that won't produce as much fumes.
Anything above 350 Deg F you get a nasty smell. Much below that and it will not melt.
So is about 350 F the sweet spot?
Yes.
