Title: Video game recommendation and review!
Post by: cobychuck on 12-30-2005 -- 10:38:36
Since we've got one going for movies, I figured why not start one for video games.  After all, entertainment in this job is a must to keep your sanity. (or at least a small shred of it)  Anyway, I guess I'll get this rolling.
I am currently playing Psychonauts for the XboX.  The game starts in a phychic summer camp and a boy who ran away from home to try and become one of the worlds elite paranormal psychic investigators known as Psychonauts.  I'm not very far into the game but so far the game has been excellent.  The story has been well orchestrated and gameplay is simple, a feature which is greatly helping me not throw the controller across the room.  Anyway this boy, Rasputin, only has a few days to get as far into training as he can because the camp has called his father to come pick him up.  So far I have the power of pyrokenesis. (Fire!)  Things are supposed to go horribly wrong when something from the lake steals all the kids minds and Raz has to go find them all, journey through their psyche and put them back where they belong.  Since I haven't yet reached that point, I can't tell you if the game stays true to its form so far.
I got Shadow of the Collossus for Christmas but haven't really had a chance to play a whole lot.  The graphics are amazing though.  The world in which this takes place is well rendered and the music to accompany gameplay is like watching a good movie.  It fits the feel and mood very well.  If anyone has played this I would appreciate a little input on whether or not you liked it and why.  I would also like to know where you can save the game at.
That's all I got for now.  There will be more to come I'm sure.

There's definetely something to be said for the older video games.   Hell, I got started on the Atari 2600 and I haven't been able to quit since then.  Granted, I was like 8 and the 2600 had been around for a while by that point, but it was still a lot of fun.  Tank Wars was always my fav.  Other than that, I don't remember a whole lot of the games.

Okay, there has to be more people out there that play video games, whether it be platform games or computer games.  Well, there is a section for online games, but that's not what I'm looking for.  Come on people, throw me a frickin bone here.  I'm crying out for recommendations!  I must feed my addiction!  But I can quit anytime, I swear.
Okay, I know this game may be a little old for a few people.  Granted its only about 2 years old.  I just got Enter the Matrix yesterday and played a little bit of it.  So far the gameplay is smooth and the story is going good.  There are live video clips (courtesy of the W brothers) mixed with cinematics.  For the action where time slows down they have what is called the focus meter, so you can only do so much before it runs out.  It's very helpful to sort out a few enemies before they overwhelm you.
Granted that's not much of a review but I haven't finished the game yet.  I'll probably just update each post as I play, so keep looking in if you are curious.  Or actually post something.  Hey, there's an idea!

Sorry. I just don't play as much as I used to. I preordered an Xbox 360, but I'm still waiting on it. Other than the occasional PC game, I just don't play that many games anymore. I barely even know what games are currently out.  :-(

Well, when you do get your 360 and get a chance to break it in, let me know how you like it.  I'm leaning toward the PS3 right now, but I don't want to cut my options off completely.  Put up a review of the system.  I'm sure a few people would appreciate it!

If Microsoft ever bothers to ship it, I might do that.

Leave it to Microsoft to screw up.  That is pretty bad when they can't get you a preordered console.  Hope you get it soon.  I know how frustrating it is to order something so you can get it as fast as possible and then it takes forever to get there.  Like two day express shipping.  Oh, it got to Vegas in two day, but I didn't see it for another month after it got here.  I assume that you've checked on the status of it and have raised holy hell to get them to send it to you.  What line of BS have they been feeding you to explain their stupidity?

I'm not dealing with Microsoft directly. I preordered the console at my local Electronics Boutique. Microsoft screwed all of the retailers with the Xbox 360 release. All of the retailers got and have been getting smaller shipments than was expected. I'm not going to fuss over this. I'll get it when I get it. Getting a game console is low on my priority list. I have more important concerns that require my attention.

Oh.  Well, uhh, yeah.  I guess that puts a kink in my little rant there.  Oh well, blame Microsoft anyway.  It makes me feel better even if it doesn't directly affect me.  At any rate, good luck with that.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I totally blame Microsoft. They competely blew it with this 360 nonsense. I just worked out most of my frustation that first week or so after the release date. I just don't feel the need to give myself a heart attack fretting over it. I got enough problems as is. :-D

(That plus I enter that EB on a regular basis. I don't want to piss them off and get banned from the store.)

Okay, I have to put a little thing in here about my Psychonauts entry from the beginning of this string.  While the games is very interesting and indeed quite fun, it is also short.  By the time I am done, I will have put a max of 20 hours into this games.  I'm used to something more like 40-50 hours of gametime.  So if anyone here wanted to play it or had made a recommendation based on my review, you may want to take a bit to think about that.

:? :-( :x :-P

Okay, I don't have any recommendations or reviews right now, as I have other issues to deal with at the moment.  I'm still working on Enter the Matrix, and am stuck in the airport trying to shoot down a SWAT helicopter.  I have Shadow of the Collossus and Rygar waiting once I'm done with that.  I think once this WAPS cycle is over, I'll probably be playing more and have something new to write here.  Until then, I hope that maybe some of the new members might have a few recommendations to post.  I'm always looking out for a good game!

So whatever became of the one you ordered?  Did it get lost in the shuffle of madness that has surrounded the 360?

Well, apparently Microsoft was only shipping about 5 to my local EB every couple of weeks, and that didn't always happen. I was about number 120 on the list and wasn't going to see it anytime soon. I got the one from the auction yesterday, and I'm as happy as can be.  :-D

You know, much like the Atari games that I started with, I think the PS1 has set a new line for classic games.  Sony really redefined the gaming console, even though they weren't the first ones onto the CD-ROM gaming.  I think one game that will always stand out for that platform is Final Fantasy 7.  It was a huge leap forward for the Final Fantasy series and a wonderful RPG for the system.  I'm playing it again on my PS2 and am having a great time.  Hopefully I'll finish it this time around.  Looking back, I should have bought the PS1 to start with instead of the Nintendo 64.  Oh well, now I've got an XboX and the PS2 and I'm perfectly happy for the moment.  I'm waiting to see how the 360 and the PS3 do before I make a move either way.

Final Fantasy VII is definitely a video game classic from the 32 bit days of console gaming. I like the storyline a lot, and the movie sequel was really enjoyable also. 8)

Okay, I'm trying to get Advent Children over Bit Torrent.  Is there a queue for this and if there is, will it tell me that I have to wait.  I have the Bit Torrent program, is there anything special I need to do to download files?  So far I haven't been able to get anything.  I don't understand whats going on.  Sorry for the stuff earlier, I was initially very confused.  Now I'm just partly mostly confused.  And what does seeding mean?

I wasn't ignoring you. You just never answered my questions. I want to give you a specific answer, but I don't want to write more than I need. That might confuse you even more, especially if you've never used the program previously. (If you want information on how the program works, read the supporting website's FAQ.) So, are you using the actual Bittorrent client or a third party client? Also, where are you trying to get the file from (I have a recommendation for a site if yours doesn't pan out.), and what problems are you having specifically? Bittorrent is fairly easy to use, but I can't help you if you don't give me some details.  8-)

Okay, I'll do my best.  I'm using the Bit Torrent client.  As far as where I'm trying to get the files from, all I did was use the "Search for Torrents" in the client.  A webpage came up with links for the movie and I clicked on a couple.  They came up in the client but would never start downloading the files.  Also, I tried to click on the "Help" section in the client menu but the help page would never come up and I've had trouble getting to the Bit Torrent main website.  I'll run Ad Aware and see if that helps so I can get to the FAQ.  Thanks.

I recentlly picked up Black for the PS2.  I've only played a few missions so far, but it's pretty intense.  Now, this game is built around blowing stuff up and throwing bullets anywhere you can, but that's part of the fun.  The story starts out with a black ops agent who is being questioned about a botched mission and as he explains, you play through the events of the previous four days.  So, forget stealth just let the Kolishnikov do the talking.  Or Uzi, or whatever other weapon you may have at your disposal.  The only thing I don't like about this game is that EA Games has this thing about its shooters.  You practically have to unload an entire clip to take down the enemy, unless you shoot him in the head and that's just on Easy!  What happened to modles like Goldeneye for the N64 where you could take down an enemy in a more realistic manner? (Granted, with an increase in difficulty level, it did take more to take them down)  Anyway, overall this game is a good play to just blow some s**t up.  Enjoy!

I wonder if that will come out on the Xbox 360? I've been spoiled by Call of Duty 2, and that game was also very intense. I don't know if any other game can match up to it. Then again, I really liked Halo 2 also. Heck, maybe I just like first-person shooters. That's got to be it. I've played Half Life 2 for the PC multiple times. There's just something about virtually shooting virtual people that provides a lot of stress relief... :-D

(Oh yeah, don't forget to check your PM, Chuck.)

So did you ever watch FF7:AC, Chuck? It came out on DVD last Tuesday. I found to the dubbing to fairly decent and the dub & sub scripts to be alright. I didn't like the fact that they picked Kim Possible for the voice of Yuffie though.

Post by: cobychuck on 05-08-2006 -- 12:09:09
I have seen it, I watched it here in my office last friday.  I have to say though, I was kind of dissapointed with the story.  It seemed fragmented and thin.  While it does give closure for Cloud's side of the story, they focused more on the action than making sure that there was a solid plot.  The graphics were wonderful, I found it to be quite beautiful and the action sequences were done well.  Although, the thing with Cloud getting launched toward the dragon (?) did seem a little much to me.  I think I probably built this movie up so far in my head that there may be some undue criticism here, but so far thats how I see it.  Also, I had the subtitled version.  See smiley rating.

:-D  :-D  :-D

Also I finally beat FF7, and it only took me 7 years!  Mostly because I had the game at my first base, got my ass handed to me by the monsters right before Jenova in the Northern Crater and gave up.  I think I was only level 75-80 something when I did that though.  This time I was 95 (Cloud), 95 (Barrett), and 92 (Red XIII).  This time I went through the monsters, Jenova, and both versions of Sephiroth easily.  Even Sephiroth's Super Nova didn't slow me down.  Oh it hurt, don't get me wrong but health was at a point where no one died.  Unlike frigin' Emerald Weapon, whose curtain attack kills everyone in my party.  I never got the materia for that final spell, so Phoenix couldn't save us when Barrett died.  Anyway, this game still holds a solid spot as one of the top landmark games in the evolution of gaming.

In the context of the story, the characters were all level 99 at the end of the game. So, I didn't have any trouble suspending my disbelief during the action sequences. Personally, I wanted to see Cloud hook up with Tifa. Oh well...I enjoyed the movie either way.  :-D
Title: Re: Video game recommendation and review!

Good point.  Yeah, when the movie started I thought that Tifa and Cloud would hook up.  Oh well.  I do have one question though.  With the whole conversation with Sephiroth, does that mean his memory or whatever is still alive in the Lifestream?  I guess I'll have to watch it again.

That's actually not that bad compared to what was originally predicted. Merrill Lynch had predicted it would cost from $800-900. The prediction was based on the cost of the next generation dvd technology Sony will be incorparating into the PlayStation.

Got another entry for Black.  I've been playing more since I beat FF7, and it still has the same stress release effect that it did from the first couple times I played.  There's nothing quite like being able to blow up an oil refinery/weapons plant, watching the huge storage tanks go up as they get hit with an RPG.  Next, the Asylum!  Nothing like close quarters fighting to make it interesting.

Finished Dreamfall: The Longest Journey earlier this week. I waited a couple of years for this game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had an engaging storyline, great characterization, and gorgeous graphics. I recommend it to anybody that likes "point and click" adventures.

This game has a "I can't wait for the next sequel" rating of 5 out of 5 smileys.

Okay, this plug is for an older game.  It came out shortly after the PS2, Twisted Metal Black.  The reason I'm bringing this up is because I unlocked some of the hidden characters last night and started on one in story mode.  This game is just f*****g twisted!  The driver for the car is the younger brother of Sweettooth (the iconic psychotic clown from TM1 & 2) who brought his father back to life (sort of) after he was shot in the head.  Now, what's really creepy about this is this kid is about 12.  I still have to finish his story, I have a few levels left, but I'm not sure I want to know the end to his story.  And I've got three more drivers to go.

To give you a better idea of how dark and creepy this game can be, let me tell you about the driver of Spectre.  Her name is Bloody Mary.  After high school as she watched her friends get married one by one, she started to lose it.  She had been tormented as a child about being ugly and it turned her into a very hateful person.  It shows marriage announcements in which she has marked over the bride and groom in red and scribbled insults on the pages.  During one wedding in which she was a bridesmaid she came off her medication.  The bride threw her the boquet and she lost it.  She grabbed the cake knife and ran it through the bride right under the sternum.  Then she drug her into a changing room and proceded to change into the bloodied wedding dress.  Once she wins the tournament, Calypso (the central charcter of the game) gives her the "true love" she's been looking for. (a lobotomized man)  However when he says that he will never love her, the cinematic cuts to her hacking him in the chest with an axe.  She then drives off saying, "I'll find my true love.  Even if I have to go through every man in this city, one by one."

Smiley rating.

Well if we're going to go that far, call the game PBS Slaughter.  Have every annoying critter, creature, or whatever the hell they are available to blown to little, itty bitty pieces.  Didn't the original Doom have a Barney code?  I can't remember if it turned the monsters into Barney or just replaced the impaled Marines with Barney.  They also had a Commander Keen code that would show him impaled instead of the Marines.  Anybody here remember the Commander Keen video game series?

Wolfenstein 3-D had the Barney code. As for PBS Slaughter, let's add Lambchop to the mix.

Well, I started Final Fantasy X about a week ago and it seems to be pretty good.  I like how they re-did the combat system so you can switch out characters throughout battle.  I do miss having Materia though.  This Ability Grid they came up with kinda gets on my nerves.  Insted of gaining character levels, there are these things called sphere levels and as you gain levels you can move your character around on the ability grid and they gain new abilities, highten HP and MP, etc.  Not sure if I really like that or not.  As far as the story goes, its been solid so far.  It begins in Zanarkind, with a blitzball player named Tidus.  During the game, this creature called Sin attacks the city and during Tidus' attempt to escape the city, we get sucked up by Sin and awakens 1000 years later.  Now he's on a quest to destory Sin and save the world.

I'm also waiting for one of the other dorm managers to bring in Ratchet and Clank so I can check that out.  More to come!

I do have some reservations about getting the Aeons for the summoner in the group.  If all we're going to be doing is running from temple to temple so she can pray or whatever it is that she does then I'm going to get bored.  Hopefully that won't be the path that it take though.

Hey, did you ever see Silent Hill?

I really must remember that I don't go for the stealth games.  I borrowed Hitman:Contracts from one of the airmen in the dorms and it took me about 20 minutes to figure out that I didn't like it.  Character movement was choppy and somewhat difficult to control, making aiming a near impossibility.  I can't say anything about the story because I didn't get past the first mission.  All I really did was Training Mode for a bit and then started the main game.  I only played the storyline for about five miutes before I really started to dislike playing.  So, since this review is totally and utterly useless to those gamers that need to know more about the game, I'd suggest at least renting this one before you pick it up at Wal-Mart or where ever.

Ratchet and Clank.  Good solution for boredom and a decent game.  I'm not too far into it and it seems to be fairly simple as far as game mechanics, but it is entertaining.  The plot is pretty simple.  Evil race wants to steal part of a planet to build a new planet for themselves to get off their failing planet.  So far thats all I have.  Good stuff though.

Okay, now that I've plowed through over 20 hours of gameplay Ratchet and Clank I can put forth a better review than last time.  As far as gameplay goes, it is fairly simple but addictive.  The controls are not overly difficult to master as they do explain the controls through gameplay. (like almost every other game)
The story starts with Ratchet on his home planet of Veldin trying to get his spaceshuttle working, while Clank is escaping from the robot plant on another planet.  Clank crashed on Veldin and from there its a crudade to defeat Chairmen Drek from completing his replacement planet to save his race from destruction.  The weapons throughout the game can often be entertaining.  To name just a few:

Visibomb Launcher: Guide your rocket to your target as you follow via on board camera.  (Think Maverick missile)
Tesla Claw: Light up your enemies with generous amounts of electricity.
Morph Ray: Nothing quite like the feeling of turning your enemies into chickens.
Suck Cannon: Suck up smaller enemies and use them as projectiles.

That pretty much sets the mood for the game.  Overall, it is entertaining, but not a real strong story.  Yeah, its probably built more for kids, but I still prefer a decent story.  See smiley rating:

I finished Ratchet & Clank and now its back to Final Fantasy XRatchet & Clank finished out nicely after about 35 hours of gameplay, a lot of that time towards the end was going around getting bolts so I could buy the R.Y.N.O (the most powerful weapon in the game) from some guy.  It takes a long frickin' time to get to 150,000 bolts!  Plus getting a little extra so I could still buy ammo.  Anyway, I would continue in the series, but the guy I borrowed the games from doesn't keep 'em in the cases, so #2 won't get past the company logo and #3 won't go to the first planet.  Then there's Ratchet : Deadlocked, but after playing the first game, Deadlocked is boring and gameplay isn't as smooth.  It's all arena combat and in order to unlock other planets, you have to get points, so it just gets so repetative that it's pointless.  So, back to good old Final Fantasy!

Yeah.  I know I'm behind.  If you look back in this thread, you'll see that I beat Final Fantasy VII back in February/March.  Only took me seven years. (Bought it, played it, got my ass handed to me, quit, gave it away, put in add in the Bullseye classifieds)  I know I'm horrible.  Didn't have the same trouble this time that I had last time though.  Probably because I understood better how to play.

I started playing Jade Empire for the XboX this last week.  It's made by Bioware, the same studio that made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and gameplay is fairly similar.  The story behind this one (so far) is that your character has been raised in a martial arts school on the edge of the empire.  During this first day in which the games start, while on the beach a raider ship pulls in and after defeating the raiders you come face to face with a Death's Hand assassin, which the school Master defeats.  After a few more trials, your teacher explains how he rescued you from a monastary while the emperor's army was attacking.  As the last in a line of "Spirit Monks", you must battle your way to the heart of the empire to defeat the evil and find a way to restore the path to the underworld so that the ghosts of the dead will no longer plauge the living.  The story has been well done so far and the mixture of swordplay, magic, and technology has been interesting.  I would recommend this game if you liked SW:KOTOR.

Well I started another one.  I borrowed Gun from my one of my bay orderlies.  This is one hell of a game.  It's set back in the old west and you play Colton White, who seeks revenge after his father was killed on a river boat attack.  From there you get to join in the fight against Thomas Magruder, a wealthy ex-Confederate General (voiced by Lance Henrickson) who is obsessed with finding a lost city of gold.  He has in his employ a crazy minister named Reed who led the attack on the river boat.  You have to fight your way through the corruption to avenge your father.  Gameplay is fairly simple although it does take a little bit to get used to aiming.  The only problem with this game (and this is only from the reviews I've read, I haven't finished it yet) is that it is too short.  Even so, it's still a great game, especially for only $20.

I finished Gun, and I am so glad that I just borrowed it.  I think I beat it in under 12 hours.  It was a lot of fun to play, the story moved along very smoothly and the final battle was a bitch (only because of how you have to fight the last guy)  Still, it was the most fun I'd had playing a video game in a while.
Now I'm starting to go back to the PS One.  I'm borrowing Resident Evil from the housing manager and I was supposed to get Silent Hill, but it's MIA.  He thinks his son loaned it to one of his friends.

Well, no more XboX for me.  I sold it to one of the dorm residents for $100.  There just wasn't enough for me to hold onto it.  I have seen the 360 in action but I still plan to wait for the release of the PS3 despite the criticism it is receiving throughout the gaming and commercial worlds.  As long as they keep quality as #1 in their games, I think the PS3 will be an excellent platform.  There are a few problems I can see right off. The first is its size.  The thing is a friggin' monster.  Second, it appears to have a slot for the games much like a car stereo.  I don't really like that.  Hopefully the game companies will make full use of the increased disk space due to Blu-Ray being added to the PS3.  Oh yes, there is one more problem.  The price tag.  There are two versions available, the most notable difference being the hard drive size. (20GB and 60GB, $499 and $599)  Here's hoping the PS3 doesn't cause Sony's gaming side to fall off the map, much like Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast. (even though Dreamcast was a decent system)

Well, it seems I'm the only one left here who really plays any games, but I'm going to keep this thread going.  I'm playing Resident Evil: Director's Cut from the PS1.  Yeah, I'm still trying to catch up on some of the older games.  This one I was kind of hesitant to play because I get into my games and I wasn't looking to be kept up all night.  However, I have been on one hell of a horror movie trip lately and it just doesn't get to me like it used to.  Anyway, I haven't gotten very far yet.  Puzzle games get on my nerves very easily and this game is chock full of 'em.  I mean, how many f*****g keys do you need for one f*****g house!?  Once there's nothing left to kill and all I have to do is find stuff, it gets rather irritating.  Okay, I'm done complaining.  So far I have been having fun, sometimes I just don't understand why programers do some of the things they do for these games.

:-)
Title: Mass Effect
Post by: cobychuck on 08-27-2008 -- 12:20:10
Okay, back into the swing of things!  My wife bought me an XboX 360 with Halo 3 (No review necessary, I think)  Because the games are getting more expensive with each system, I have been borrowing games for the 360.
First up is Mass Effect from Bioware.  As with Star Wars: KOTOR, you can choose to be good or bad.  The only problem with this game is there is not the same incentive to play through twice to see what happens.  Basically, you're going to save the universe, there's just two ways to go about it.  Either way, the game ends basically the same.
Gameplay itself is excellent.  The HUD it easy to use and controls are fairly intuitive.  Combat is fairly simple, though sometimes it can be overwhelming.  There were several situation where the first time I went in, the team would be wiped out and I would do it again and be just fine.  The only real hold up to this game is that the 360 has trouble keeping up with the graphics, which are beautiful.  Overall, this is a great game with only minor problems.  Definetely something to pick up.

Crysis rules, though you need a decent PC to play.

Crysis Warhead comes out Sept 16 with optimization of the Cryengine to allow for better gameplay on lesser rigs.  The graphics in this game are the best I have ever seen.  Warhead Multiplayer is also going to include TeamInstantAction.  Run and Gun baby!!  A must for hardcore PC gamers.

Well, due to the cost of games on the new system, the games I talk about are probably ones that are already dated.  However, every now and then I may barrow one that is actually recent.  I'm playing Lost Odyssey right now, which came out shortly after the 360 did.  I'm also playing Dirt and Forza Motorsports 2, and I'm playing Baja: Edge of Control on the PS3. (Even though it's out for both systems)  I also have a stack of games I haven't played yet which include Gears of War, The Last Remnant, and The Darkness.
I recently downloaded the demo for Batman: Arkham Asylum and that was pretty sweet.  I am definetely looking forward to playing that one.  So that's where I'm at right now.  Oh, and I also have joined those who have had to send in their 360 for repair for Error 74.

I downloaded the demo for Dirt 2 this weekend and I must say, if the demo is any indication, then this will blow the first one away.  The physics are greatly improved and the level of detail is much better.  It drives less like WRC for the PS2 and more like real racing.  The took a lot of what they learned with Grid and put it in this game.
The only races available for the demo are Landrush Baja in California and a rally race in Morocco.  Vehicles available are the West Coast Choppers Trophy Truck and Mitsubishi Eclipse rally car.  So if you can, check it out.

There is only one game I play.  Civilization

You start with a city full of spear chuckers.  Then you have to manage everything money, science, culture as you progress your civilization through time..  The point of the game is to create the greatest civilization..

Caution.. This game is addicting.  You can easily kill a weekend, just playing this game.

Crysis
Crysis Wars

Play multiplayer constantly and the graphics are superb provided you have a beefy enough PC to run it on high.  Any other players out there?

I just downloaded A Kingdom for Keflings from XboX Live Arcade this last weekend.  It's one of those games that's kind of stupid but still fun.  Basically you play a giant who is helping build a kingdom for these little human things.  The resource managemant is a little too involved for a game like this, but I suppose it isn't too bad overall.

(almost) any Total War PC game is good for a while

Civilization is good too, although the later versions are heavier on graphics and a bit lighter on AI

I downloaded the demo for Jack Black's Brutal Legend while I was on leave and it looks like it is going to be a pretty entertaining game.  Double Fine is involved in the productions, so that is promising.  They were involved with Psychonauts for the original XboX, which was a very under rated game.
The story starts with Jack as a roadie for a modern "metal" band.  During the concert, one of the band members walks out onto the stage prop that he had been told not to and falls.  Jack saves the band member but is then crushed by the falling prop.  Blood drips into his belt buckle which turns out to be an ancient relic and he is transported to another world to battle demons and save the future of metal.  It incorporates Black's sense of humor and his love of metal music into an entertaining and amusing format.  If the full game plays like the demo, it will definetely be something to play.  Guest voices include Rob Halford and possibly Ozzy Osbourne.

Grand Theft Auto!!!  My absolute favorite game.  I don't like doing the missions (I let my 20-yr-old son do that part).  But I like being able to drive anywhere.  The GTA San Andreas version had (in my not-so-well-informed opinion) the best functionality; but the new GTA IV has the best graphics.

I'm probably not the typical gamer though.  I can't play the competitive games, as they elevate my aging blood pressure.  But there is something relaxing about camping out on the fifth floor of an oil refinery with an RPG gun and blowing up every car that passes, getting shot at by SWAT in a helicopter; then at the last second, hitting the cheat code to turn off my wanted level.

DISCLAIMER:  I would never ever do anything like that in reality....

That's an interesting debate as to the appropriateness of such animated violence.  I have never been in a fight - ever.  I am a very non-violent person; and I find virtually no connection between such unrealistic entertainment and real life.  The people who I think  have no business with such gaming are those who make some unhealthy connection to real life.

Ok - ok - so I am late jumping on the gaming wagon. .  but I finally got my PS3 this week.

What are some good games?

I bought The Show 09 for a baseball fix.

I do not like "realistic" military games.

A good RPG?  I hear alot about Oblivion, but have never seen or played it.

Typical Games I like include:
Lara Croft
College Football (EA Sports)
Baulders Gate

So any recommendations?

I can't remember the full name of the adventure game demo version that came with the PS3, but we bought the full version and really liked it.  I'll have to find out and post.

Oblivion is real great and so is Fallout 3 for RPGs.  Grand Theft Auto 4, Batman Arkham Asylum, and UnCharted I & II are all bad ass action adventure games that deserve at the very least a rent if not buy.  Uncharted is pretty short though so it probably is just a rent.

Drakes Fortune.  That was the one.  I was corrected this morning that it was not a demo.  But it did go pretty quickly.  So maybe just a rental.

And he just downloaded the beta version of the UNCHARTED 2 Among Thieves - online version.  My son likes it, but I think it's just a warmed over version of Socom.  Just a room full of opponents shooting at each other.  I'm not against, but don't enjoy that type of gaming.

Great call on the RPG's I would wait on Fallout 3 for the Game of the Year addition. You get the original game which was great along with all of the downloadable content that was originally supplied only to the Xbox 360. Its a great game very addicting I recently sold the original and plan on buying the Game of the Year addition.

Just finished ODST for the Xbox......great game but kinda short I recommend a rental on this one.

Anybody try Borderlands? If so which system or pc...

Prices seem a bit steep for me to jump on a ps3 and try it. Not that I can't afford it its just that $60 a pop is high.

I've heard its good but better if you do co-op as the difficulty seems to be based on two to four players.

I really don't have anything else right now.  Everything I'm playing on the 360 is back from when it was first released.  The closest thing I have played to new was the demo for Left 4 Dead 2.  While that game was well put together, it really wasn't quite my thing.  So I'm pretty much waiting until Chirstmas to get anything newer, and even then I won't really be able to say much because everything I asked for will have been out for a while by the time I play them.  I am so far behind right now it's not even funny.  I swear I'm never going to finish all the games that I have building up...

I started playing Batman:Arkham Asylum the other day, and so far the game is really pretty good.  There were a lot of complaints through the reviews that there was no "jump" available, and while I do find it a little odd, it really doesn't subtract much from the experience.  The story flows smoothly and the Easy setting actually lives up to its name.  The graphics are quite beautiful and it really gets the feel of Arkham across nicely.  So far I haven't played enough to rank the game, but as long as it keeps on the way it is, it should be a good game.
