After working outside of PMEL (but still in electronics) for a couple decades, I'd like to get back with the program, so to speak. It's a job I enjoyed, although I'm sure it has changed a bit. I've downloaded the Metrology Handbook, which is good, but I'm looking for other resources, too. A while ago we moved out to WA and happen to be very close to Bangor Trident Base, which has a PMEL. That brings up a couple more questions -- are there significant differences in Navy vs AF PMELs; and who has the contract at Bangor? I haven't been able to find out by searching, although it appears that Lockheed Martin has had it in the past. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
There are definite differences between the two programs, but they are both DOD and likewise have many similarities due to the nature of the military as a whole. It really depends on the needs of the lab and the mindset of the manager as to wether you having AF vs USN training (or vice versa) is a problem. Usually it's not but I'd talk with whoever runs the lab and let them know who you are, what you're about, and what your strengths are. How well you hit it off with him or her will probably be the biggest hurdle. Good luck!
As far as I know, Lockheed Martin is still the contractor operating the lab. I have several acquaintances that work at the Bangor lab, none of them having specific PMEL experience when they hired on, just a strong electronics background. If you haven't already, why don't you just give it a try?
