Check your local newspapers for listings of parades and other events commemorating the day as well as bank, school, and post office closures! Hope the day "measures" up to your expectations! ; )

Darn it, I missed it again!!  I'm actually being a little sincere there.

I work in an in-house cal lab and sometime last year we got this Employee Engagement Survey to see how the morale is in the company.  Our departement didn't feel we were getting enough recognition in the plant for being the dumping grounds of problems, so we used Metrology Day to Re-introduce ourselves to the plant.  We had tables set up with test equipment explaining what exactly we do and we invited a bunch of vendors i.e. Agilent, Tek, Fluke, Test Equity, Electro Rent and others to display and show test equipment that we can calibrate in-house so we can maximize turn around without having to buy more standards to support specifications or parameters our process doesn't require.  We're not in the procurement process but we hope to change that.  It turned out be quite successful as we can tell so far, the engineers aren't allowed to go to shows much and the junior engineers often know nothing about metrology.

I'm not being facetious... that is a cool idea.  I am not currently in an in-house lab (although I've spent quite a few years over my too long career in in-house labs), so I can well identify with the unfortunate "second class citizen" perceptions by non-calibration people.  I like it.
