Hello all. I just joined the USAF, got through MEPS (jokes on those who told me it was bad!), and landed my job. . . in PMEL!!! Well I understand it's a Meteorology. . . Electrical. . . labrotory. . . WHAT IS IT?! I've heard so much and that there are so many jobs that fit into this one job listing and I've read up on it online, but I think hearing it from someone who is able to answer questions would be much easier. Thanks in advance for anyone who answers this, I know what I'm saying may seem a little broad, but this job is something that goes understated wherever information is available. :D
First, congrats on joining the Air Force, the best branch in the Military, right behind the Army that is.....
PMEL, or TMDE as we call it in the Army, is the BEST job in the military and out of it as far as I am concerned.
Can't speak much about AF BCT, but I did go to school at Keelser AFB. Have fun. Learn as much as you can. And always be open to advice.
To get more of an idea of WHAT we do, I imagine you drive a car and get gas on a regular basis. Those little stickers on the gas pump that are valid for a year or so saying the pump has been certified by the state Bureau of Weights and Measures.... yeah, that's what PMEL does (in perhaps the most basic literal sense).
We measure an unknown quantity, whether it be liquid, gas, electricity, weight, or whatever, and compare that amount to a known amount. Our known amounts come from someone elses, whose comes from someone else, and in the end, they come from NIST. (www.nist.gov)
Hope that clarifies it somewhat..... oh, and it's Metrology, not Meteorology....... Metrology is the science of weights and measures, not the study of weather patterns aka Dan the Man on your local TV station who is right 15% of the time. We prefer to be right at least 95% of the time
Thank you so much for clearing that up. We must have misread that somewhere along the way because I think that was confusing us. I personally enjoy your description more, so I'm lucky in that. Again, thanks. I'm sure I'll be back looking for help with something later.
Good luck to you, chili today & hot tamale. That one never gets old.
Airman Rose reports. Basic wasn't bad. Electronic principles for a month or two now. Then onward to my PMEL school. Currently in Keesler AFB, MS. . . hotter than Texas here and there are some hurricanes a-brewing. I'm really glad I took this job.
Anyway, now that I have classes and such, I'll be back more and more often looking for answers so I can pass them there block tests. Catch you all later!
