Housing prices are insane and the price of gas is more. I bet 50k in Hawaii is like making 30k in the states. Chump change.

Ahh, but you don't have to pay big heating bills, or buy winter clothing.  Public transportation goes just about everywhere you need to go. Pineapples and lots of fish to eat.....

I was in the USN at Pearl Harbor for three years and loved it.  If I were looking (which I'm not), I would go there in a minute.  It is very expensive in terms of price per item (housing, groceries, etc.), and I hear it is worse than when I was there 1982-85.  Back then housing was about like the Silicon Valley area and food was 30% to 60% higher.

BUT (as I LOVE Hawaii), you don't need as much stuff.  You live in a smaller place, so don't look for a full sized mainland style house.  In some areas you about don't need heat or A/C (so electric bill is lower). and everything is closer, so you don't spend so much in transportation costs.  A lot of not-so-low-income people use public transportation, as that is more how it is done there.  I even have relatives out there who discourage people from moving there due to the costs, and they say they are wishing for an opportunity to move to the mainland (don't say "back to the states" to a Hawaiian, as they are proud of not only their beautiful culture, but also of their statehood.  And by the way, my favorite part of Hawaii is not the scenery, but the people.

Anyway, I love Hawaii.  Had to say that.

P.S. - in case you didn't notice my user name is reflective of my love for Hawaii (born in Vermont, living in the great state of Texas - but I LOVE Hawaii).
